Design for Manufacturing (DFM) – There’s a Little Give and Take with Manufacturers, But You Can Get What You Want With The Right Tools.

Every great idea needs a manufacturer that makes it come to life. While the quality of the manufacturer may be up for discussion in another conversation, every manufacturer will need to have a few design features that allow their equipment and processes to make the product. For example when you are molding a plastic, you’ll need to have specific elevations of the surface, aka “bosses” that are higher than others or located in specific places. This isn’t because the manufacturer wants to change the design, its because they have to based on how the molten plastic is traveling throughout the mold that is making your design! Changes like this are known as Design For Manufacturing or DFM for short.

Because of DFM, the initial CAD design and blueprints you use to start sourcing a product are typically never the last. Usually after the prints are sent our with the RFQ’s, there are some questions that arise on both ends. Never assume a manufacturer is going to make a product exactly as you sent out for them to bid. Don’t get me wrong, it will be close! With the proper guidance, the changes that will arise will more than likely not even make an impact and will still be a great product. That is why sourcing is so important. You may have to settle on a few small things, but there is always some critical thinking that is involved to solve some initial DFM problems. Don’t let this deter you. With the right team you can overcome these challenges. But it is good to expect it.

This is why we make sure to have plenty of design reviews when assisting in the sourcing of our clients products. DFM needs to be addressed early on, clearly and can make for a better quality product. The sooner you start having design reviews with the manufacturer, prior to selecting them as a vendor, the sooner you’ll be able to know which supplier is right for you! Don’t sleep on getting ahead of the ball on this. You’ll be glad you took the time to have these meetings.
